Coronation Street stars Alison King and Mikey North have addressed media accusations that they shared a drunken ‘snog’ during the ceremony of the National Television Awards last week. The pair, best known for playing Carla Connor and Gary Windass in the soap, have denied that a kiss took place and clarified that Mikey was whispering in Alison’s ear.
Video footage was shared with The Sun by audience members recording the pair. While Alison and Mikey were talking closely in the crowded and filmed event, it wasn’t completely clear what had happened between them.
Alison has acknowledged her regret at being drunk and having to leave the ceremony early but categorically denies that she and Mikey shared a lingering kiss while sitting in the audience.
In a released statement, the popular actress said: ‘I would like to take this opportunity to say that, whilst it was obvious to see that regrettably I did have too much to drink at the National TV Awards, and chose to leave the event early, I did not kiss my co star Mikey North as has been reported.’
Married Mikey also responded and added to OK!: ‘I would like to make one thing clear – I did not kiss my co-star Alison King during the recent National Television Awards. It is beyond ludicrous to suggest that I would or that I did. The grainy recording shows me simply speaking in her ear at what was a noisy public event.’
He added that the accusatory reports had led to ‘great distress’ for his family.
Coronation Street had a successful night at the awards as Katie McGlynn – who played ill fated Sinead Osbourne – took the prize for Best Serial Drama Performance while Peter Ash, who plays Paul Foreman, was Best Newcomer.
Emmerdale meanwhile once again took the crown as Best Serial Drama, making it four times in a row.
