Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon) is about to face her old nightmares once again when she comes face to face with one of the child sex abusers who was part of Nathan Curtis’ vicious exploitation rings. Bethany was groomed and abused by Nathan and sold out to other men as part of the most horrific experience of her life.
She has since rebuilt things but the trauma comes back to her when she spots one of the men dining with his family in the bistro. As everything comes rushing back in a terrible fashion, she informs Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) about who he is and he struggles to hold his temper.
Eventually a confrontation explodes as Daniel confronts him in front of his family and Bethany is left distressed by the whole situation. The family storm out of the restraurant but when Bethany’s supportive best friend Craig Tinker (Colson Smith) gets drawn into the mess, the family make a getaway in the car and knock him down, leaving him in a bad way.
Bethany rushes to the side of her injured pal and is rocked by guilt that once again he has been hurt by what has happened to her. But the experience drives her to start taking more control of her dark memories.
Daniel is impressed when Bethany decides she is going to write an article to help other survivors of abuse and he is happy to help her with her work. But will it help Bethany to put some of her demons at bay? Or will delving back through what she went through be detrimental to her?
It remains to be seen how bad things are for Craig and whether Bethany will find any solace in writing about her experiences but could this be the beginning of the journey to Bethany’s exit?
Lucy Fallon will depart the show early next year when her contract expires.
Coronation Street continues on Monday 19th August at 7:30pm and 8:30pm on ITV.
