Ellie Goulding has confessed she ‘can’t imagine performing on stage’ now, as lockdown has made her more ‘introverted’ than usual.
The singer, 33, who admits she is usually quite shy anyway, explained that her confidence has taken a knock during her time away from the music scene during lockdown and she feels like she now needs to ‘build it back up again’ before heading on tour.
‘I watched my Glastonbury performance and I can’t believe I did that in front of all those people. I think I am going to have to build up all that courage.’
Ellie explained that when she’s on stage she goes into ‘that other character’ and her confidence comes ‘out of nowhere’, but as soon as she finishes her performance, her shyness comes back.
‘I have never gone to any of my own after-show parties, genuinely, in the whole time I have toured, because I am just a bit too shy,’ she confessed.
Ellie continued: ‘There is always a misconception that if you are a performer and you can perform to all those people, you must be a very confident, extrovert person, but actually, I am the complete opposite.’
‘I think also this time has made me even more so,’ Ellie said of being forced to stay home due to the coronavirus pandemic over the last few months.
The Love Me Like You Do hit-maker had announced her Brightest Blue tour for 2021 on Instagram, with Ellie heading across the country to perform a series of intimate shows.
She told fans: ‘Oh sheeeet I’m so excited to announce my first run of intimate (distanced) shows for 2021… The feeling I get from my new album is that people get to immerse themselves into a world of hope despite everything being so bleak.
‘You have to tear through your own demons to get to the other side but also realising that you can free yourself from toxic relationships! Looking forward to finally being able to see you all and be with you once again. 💙x.’
It comes, as Ellie, who tied the knot to husband Caspar Jopling last year, claimed that being an activist has impacted on her career.
She revealed that speaking out about climate change on her social media platforms has seen her fall out of favour with fans, with every post losing her ‘at least a thousand followers’ each time.
‘I lose followers, every time I post anything about climate change, I lose at lease a thousand followers. Because people are following me for a very specific reason and it’s not the environment,’ she said on the So Hot Right Now podcast.
Suggesting she used to hold back from speaking out at the beginning of her career, Ellie added ‘I genuinely thought the activism would jeopardise my job and I believe it has, actually.’
