Lena Waithe’s wife has filed for divorce, less than a year after they tied the knot.
The Master of None star and Alana Mayo announced in January that they had separated, just two months after they got married.
A statement at the time read: ‘After careful thought and consideration, we have decided to part ways.
‘We have nothing but support for one another and ask that you respect our privacy during this time.’
Now, Mayo, 35, has officially filed a petition for divorce in Los Angeles, according to The Blast.
Actress Lena, 36, and Alana – who is now President of Orion Pictures at MGM – had been dating for over three years before their marriage and tied the knot in a San Francisco courthouse in late 2019.
The Ready Player One star told John Legend on The Ellen DeGeneres Show: ‘We snuck and did it. We didn’t really make any announcements.
‘We got married right in front of Harvey Milk’s bust. It was her idea, like all good things are. She was just driving and she saw the courthouse and she said, “We should get married there.” And I said, “cool, I’m down.”
‘It was a humbling day, you know, to marry someone so amazing, but also to really appreciate all the work that so many people have put in for us to be able to do that. Everybody should be able to do that.’
Alana identified as straight before she began a relationship with Lena in 2016, with Lena previously telling Refinery29: ‘I love the fact that I can say to people that my girlfriend used to be a full-blooded heterosexual woman. She was never closeted; she was never pining. People always go: “Oh, so she was closeted all of those years?” And I go, “No! Not at all.”
‘She just took a liking to me and wanted to try dating me. I’m the first serious, adult relationship she’s ever had. I don’t think it’s about the fact that I’m a woman; it’s about the fact that she and I connect on a deep, human level. We just really get each other.’
Lena is best known for starring as Denise in the Aziz Ansari series Master of None, as well as creating and starring in The Chi.
She is currently working on a series for Amazon about open marriages.
The star told Hollywood Reporter: ‘I’ve never been in an open marriage, but it’s fascinating to me. We live in a world where, if I told you I cheated on my wife, you would be like, “Yeah, that’s the way it goes”.
‘But if I told you that I’m in an open marriage, it would be as if I told you I’m joining the Church of Scientology.
‘Society has such a conservative way of looking at marriage. I do think that we as a nation need to reevaluate what marriage looks like for us as a country — because whatever we have right now, it ain’t working.’
