Fans of the Sex Pistols will get a rare chance to own film footage of their historic concerts from 1976 as they go up for auction later this month.

The video, which captures historic moments from two of the punk band’s performances at Manchester’s Free Trade Hall in June and July 1976.

The concert in June 1976 was previously described as ‘the gig that changed the world’ by inspiring a generation of musicians who attended the show.

Although the attendance was small at around 40 people, among those were Joy Division and New Order’s co-founder Peter Hook who was said to have bought a bass guitar after the show as well as Anthony (Tony) Wilson, who was supposedly inspired to start the independent record label Factory Records after the gig.

The Smiths frontman Morrissey, singer and songwriter Mick Hucknall of Simply Red and The Fall’s lead singer Mark E Smith were also reportedly in attendance.

Sex Pistols fans will have to dig deep if they want to get the footage and the copyright as the price tag is upwards of £20,000 as it goes up for sale on September 14 through Omega Auctions.

Auctioneer Paul Fairweather said: ‘These concerts have entered into punk folklore and justifiably so.

‘The impact that the shows had and the events they inspired truly did change the course of musical history.

‘The footage shows the Pistols at their sneering, swaggering best and truly does capture what must have been so electrifying for the audiences lucky enough to have attended.

‘We think they are incredibly exciting and can’t wait to see how they will go on auction day.’

The sale comes after members of the band faced off in court over the rights to use their music in a TV series.

More: John Lydon

John Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten, was sued by the band’s drummer Paul Cook and guitarist Steve Jones after objecting to their music being used in an upcoming series called Pistol.

He ultimately lost the case, which means the band will be able to use their hits in the series, directed by Danny Boyle, based on Steve’s 2016 memoir called Lonely Boy: Tales From A Sex Pistol.
