While nothing is confirmed as of yet, with producer Barbara Broccoli previously saying she would wait until the final film is out before looking at replacements for Daniel, Rege-Jean’s one of the stars who could be in with a shot.
Pierce, 68, who played Bond in four films in the franchise – GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day – believes Rege-Jean could be a good fit.
He told ET Online while promoting his new film Cinderella: ‘Good luck, good luck. I think he would be wonderful.’
Rege-Jean also addressed the speculation of him playing 007, recently telling GQ: ‘Well, of all the things you’ll read about yourself on the internet, it’s one of the more pleasant and more flattering. But I take it and leave it at that, personally.’
While Rege-Jean is the bookies’ favourite, other actors whose names might be in the ring include Tom Hardy, James Norton, Idris Elba, Luke Evans and Richard Madden.
Pierce also voiced his support for Idris and Tom for the role in the past, telling People in the summer: ‘Idris Elba comes to mind. Idris is such a powerful presence and such a great former voice tensity. He would be magnificent.
‘There’s Tom Hardy out there as well. Tom can really chew the furniture up, just be a ball boy – both men can.’
Pierce also revealed that he thinks Daniel’s legacy has greatly benefited the James Bond franchise: ‘You have to get over that and celebrate it as a member of the audience and as a man who has kind of walked that walk and played that part. Bond will live on here.’
