The two cousins could be in line for a major clash at WrestleMania 39 in Hollywood with both expressing an interest, and now the Tribal Chief’s special counsel has ‘applauded’ the blockbuster actor for hyping up a potential fight.
Speaking exclusively to Metro.co.uk, Heyman said: ‘I look at it from a completely different perspective than you do. I don’t look at it as, “Roman Reigns wants to face Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson at WrestleMania”.
‘I look at it as… Roman Reigns is considering accommodating Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s desire to face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania.
‘I’d like to add that there are dozens of top tier, A-list performers and athletes and superstars who want to get into the ring with Roman Reigns a WrestleMania – and why shouldn’t they? It is the biggest match of the year on the grandest stage of them all.’
Heyman even stated it’s Roman Reigns doing The Rock a favour by entertaining the possibility of a match with such mainstream appeal.
He added: ‘I applaud Dwayne The Rock Johnson for keeping his name out there in the media by expressing a desire to step into the ring with the number one box office attraction in sports, entertainment or sports entertainment, Roman Reigns.’
If it does take place at WrestleMania in 2023, Heyman also has no doubt that Reigns will emerge victorious with Dwayne looking strong ‘in defeat’.
Asked what the match would mean for the business and the legacy of those involved, he said: ‘It would mean that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will probably look magnificent in defeat when Roman Reigns either pins The Rock, or applies the guillotine and forces The Rock to tap out in the middle of the ring at WrestleMania.’
Although he’s spent much of the last decade by the side of Brock Lesnar – and, for a time, CM Punk – Heyman has been the special counsel for Reigns since last summer, and it’s a role he’s thriving in.
‘I can’t imagine a bigger platform Paul Heyman could have been given than being special counsel to the tribal chief, Roman Reigns,’ he smiled.
‘If Paul Heyman came back after being the advocate for Brock Lesnar and the executive director of Raw, and you made me the unified WWE and Universal Champion – not that you should have, but if you did, it wouldn’t be as big a platform as the role I serve at this moment.
‘Roman Reigns is driven, and determined to set box office records and do things at a level never before achieved in this industry. I am honoured, both personally and professionally, to be along for that ride.’
That ride will continue on Sunday night at WrestleMania 37 as Roman Reigns steps out in front of a live crowd at Raymond James Stadium to defend his Universal Championship against Royal Rumble winner Edge, and Daniel Bryan.
Pondering the Leader of the Yes Movement being included to make the planned bout a Triple Threat, Heyman issued a word of warning.
He added: ‘It’s a very courageous step from Daniel Bryan to join Edge in what is guaranteed to be a historic ass whipping at the hands of the most dominant Universal Champion in history, Roman Reigns.’
