Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 has all the hallmarks of a massive seller on the Nintendo Switch.
The games giant has yet to reveal a release date for the new Legend of Zelda project, with very little known about how far along the project is.
Fans will be hoping for a 2020 launch for Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 and there’s plenty to show why Nintendo would want the sequel to launch as soon as possible.
It has just been confirmed that Zelda Breath of the Wild is the best selling game in the Legend franchise.
That’s a huge feat for a game that was an effect launch title for the Nintendo Switch.
Video Games Industry Analyst, Mat Piscatella, of the NPD Group shared the details on Twitter.
He told fans: “Not sure how I missed it, but The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild became the best-selling Zelda game some time ago. Here are the top 5 best-selling Zelda property games in the U.S. life to date.”
The top five games in the Zelda series include BOTW at the top, followed by Twilight Princess, Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask and Link’s Crossbow Training.
Another exciting fact confirmed by Piscatella is that the Breath of the Wild would be top of the list even without the sales from the Wii U.
Some fans may have forgotten that this Legend of Zelda game was initially planned as a Wii U exclusive.
Replying to a fan on Twitter, the NPD analyst revealed: “Oh yeah, #1 even excluding Wii U. The Wii U version alone wouldn’t crack the top 10.”
Adding: “Summer 2019 has been rough for hardware, but software sales still going well, particularly when considering how light the new release slate has been.
“(sic) But really, the story of 2019 is Nintendo. #1 pub, #1 hw, dominating the SW charts despite no digital… amazing.”
So while Breath of the Wild was a massive console seller for the Nintendo Switch, it didn’t have the same effect on the failing Wii U.
And the current Nintendo Switch sales numbers could be given a great boost in the coming months.
News this week suggests that the handheld console could be released in a massive new region before the new Zelda game is launched.
And that would mean an established sales base in place for when Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 arrives.
It was recently revealed that Tencent would be handling the launch of the Nintendo Switch in China.
There is no set release date for the console in the massive gaming region, but it seems likely to be in place for the launch BOTW2.
According to one recent rumour, Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 could launch in late 2020 or early 2021.
This rumour cannot be verified at this point and should, therefore, be taken with a big pinch of salt.
It adds that the new Legend of Zelda will have a darker tone and will have a slightly different title to reflect that.
There is also speculation that BOTW2 will have some kind of multiplayer aspect to it, although this is another unverified rumour.
What we do know is that whenever the new game does hit the market, it will have access to China, a massive new region for sales.
Zelda Breath of the Wild is out now on Nintendo Switch and will be followed by a sequel in the coming years.
