Jamie Carragher believes that Fabinho is the best defensive midfielder in the Premier League and thinks his former club have been stronger since he established himself in the team.
The 25-year-old moved to Liverpool in a £43.7m deal from Monaco last summer but he initially struggled to make an impression at Anfield, failing to nail down a place in Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Fabinho has steadily grown in influence at Liverpool, though, starting in the Champions League final win over Spurs and featuring in all four of their Premier League fixtures this term.
Carragher has been so impressed by Fabinho’s impact in the side that he believes he has usurped Manchester City’s Fernandinho as the division’s most influential holding midfielder.
Speaking after Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Burnley at Turf Moor, Carragher said: ‘I actually think he’s the best in the Premier League now in that position.
‘Fernandinho looks like he’s fading out of the City team and Rodri is just coming in but I think since Christmas when he came in [to the team] you could argue he was Liverpool’s best player last season.
‘Right now I think he’s the best in that position. I think Liverpool paid between £40-50m, it was a few quid, he had a difficult start but that’s where Liverpool have improved this season.
‘If you think of the start of last season how well they were playing but they didn’t have Fabinho.’
