Nicky Butt believes Mason Greenwood and Angel Gomes could be the breakthrough stars of Manchester United’s 2019/20 season, with the academy graduates hoping to get opportunities under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season.
The former United midfielder has worked closely with both players in his role as head of first team development and as a former head of the club’s academy and he was asked to name the players in the current crop of youngsters who excite him most.
Gomes, 18, who has long been tipped to become a future star at Old Trafford, and Greenwood, 17, who already got minutes under his belt against Chelsea, were both heavily involved in pre-season and are yet to feature for the Under-23s outfit this season.
And Butt thinks both could become first team regulars for Solskjaer going forward.
‘I think it’s unfair to settle on one,’ Butt said. ‘I think Gomes could set alight this season and do really well, he’s matured and got a lot stronger.
‘Purely for the excitement and the fans I think Greenwood is going to be a real, real superstar if he keeps his feet on the ground, he’s patient and he scores the goals that he can.
‘He’s both footed, he’s a big, strong, powereful kid who can score goals and he’s still very much a young boy who’s likeable.’
