Rafael Nadal says it’s an ‘honour’ to be battling Roger Federer for the all-time males’s Grand Slam record after securing his 19th main in Sunday’s US Open closing.

The Spaniard overcame Daniil Medvedev in an exhilarating 7-5 6-Three 5-7 4-6 6-Four victory which lasted 4 hours and 51 minutes to declare his fourth title at Flushing Meadows.

It strikes him only one Grand Slam title behind Federer’s record of 20 and whereas Nadal – who’s 5 years youthful – says he would really like to eclipse his previous rival, it’s not his final aim.

Speaking after his win, Nadal stated: ‘I might love to be the one who wins extra, however I’m not pondering and I not going to apply day by day or not taking part in tennis for it. I’m taking part in tennis as a result of I like to play tennis.

‘I can’t simply take into consideration Grand Slams, no? Tennis is greater than Grand Slams. I would like to take into consideration the remainder of the issues.

‘I play to be happy. Of course, the victory of today makes me super happy. But few weeks ago I won in Montreal and that was an important moment for me, too.’

He continued: ‘I feel honoured to be part of this battle. But I repeat the same: you can’t be all day trying subsequent to you about if one having extra or one having little bit much less as a result of you can be pissed off.
