Tottenham Hotspur are hopeful that they can persuade Toby Alderweireld to sign a contract extension with his existing deal set to expire next June.

The 30-year-old has been tipped to leave Spurs over the past two years after refusing to sign a new contract despite the club’s willingness to extend his stay in north London.

Alderweireld was expected by many to move on during the summer after a £25m release clause in his current contract was activated although there was surprisingly little interest in his services.

According to the Sun, Alderweireld could now perform a dramatic u-turn by committing his future to Spurs beyond the end of the campaign in what would be a huge boost to Mauricio Pochettino.

During his contract impasse in 2017-18, Alderweireld lost his starting place in the Spurs side but he re-established himself last term, featuring 50 times in all competitions for the Champions League finalists.

The Belgium international has also started both of Spurs’ matches this season, alongside the Colombian Davinson Sanchez, rather than his international colleague Jan Vertonghen.

There has also been speculation over Vertonghen’s future as he too is out of contract at the end of the season and he seems to have lost his place under Pochettino over fitness issues.

Christian Eriksen is another key player that could be on his way out of Spurs with his deal also set to expire in 2020 and Real Madrid are reportedly among his suitors.

Alderweireld has established himself as one of the Premier League’s best defenders since joining Spurs from Atletico Madrid in 2015 and has made 167 appearances for the club in total.
