A British man and girl have drowned off a beach in Portugal after experiencing difficulties whereas swimming.

The tragedy occurred at 2.30pm native time, as the person tried to assist his buddy, who clung on to a rock after he observed that she was in hassle, native media reported.

The incident came about at a beach on Zambujeira do Mar in Portugal’s Alentejo area.

Local rushed to their help and tried to revive the pair on the beach.

The our bodies of the unnamed pair have been taken by a Portuguese air pressure helicopter to the close by city of Beja.

Commander of the native maritime police pressure Rui Pedro Silva Felipe stated: ‘I can affirm they’re each British residents.

‘The man was 34 and the lady was 33.

‘I cannot confirm 100 per cent but I believe they were in Portugal on holiday with a group of friends.’

He added that the ocean on the time of the incident was ‘a little rough’ and that there was no lifeguard service after September 15 on the beach.
