A murder investigation has been launched after a 30-year-old father was killed during an altercation at a house on Monday.
Northumbria Police were called to the home in Blyth, Northumberland, just before 2am, where Scott Patterson was pronounced dead at the scene.
It is understood he had been socialising with people he knew when he was assaulted, the force said.
The person believed to have been responsible for the assault was an associate of Mr Patterson, from Blyth, but had left the area by the time officers arrived.
A post-mortem examination is due to take place to establish the cause of death.
Superintendent Helen Anderson said: ‘This is an incredibly difficult time for Scott’s family and we have specially trained family liaison officers supporting them.
‘This is not being treated as a stranger attack but we are still carrying out inquiries to trace a named suspect who we believe to be responsible for the assault.’
